[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Blacklist Season 8 Finale, “Konets.”]
Farewell Elizabeth Eager!
After eight seasons, The Blacklist bid adieu to the rookie FBI agent-turned-felony in the June 23 season finale of the sequence, just more than a week following it was announced that Megan Boone would be leaving as a series normal soon after Season 8. Nevertheless the announcement should not have occur as a significant surprise — Boone was offscreen for a big part of the period although Liz was on the lam as a fugitive — news of the co-lead’s (together with James Spader) exit nonetheless brought about shockwaves.
But as unexpected as the departure could really feel to viewers, it sounds like the writers experienced loads of time to prepare the conclusion of Liz’s story, with Deadline reporting that the (mutual) final decision was designed early on in the eighth time for Boone to depart immediately after the last episode.
So how did Blacklist deal with Agent Keen’s closing chapter? “Konets” picks up just after the penultimate episode, “Nachalo,” dropped some major bombshells — namely that Liz’s mom Katarina Rostova is continue to alive (and in hiding), and the girl she thought to be her mom is basically a spy. Also, the real Raymond Reddington was Liz’s father, whom she shot and killed as a youngster, spurring Katarina to deliver her to stay with her adoptive father. Due to the fact no one was aware of Reddington’s death, Katarina produced a new “Red” (Spader) to watch more than Liz.
So who is Crimson really? In advance of Raymond will expose that by using a letter from Liz’s mom, he has just one “condition” — he desires her to choose his lifestyle, “literally and metaphorically.” By having Purple out, she’ll establish to other criminals that she is “a power to be reckoned with” and head up his empire, using about the blacklist.
Liz turns him down, but he’s not the only a person who needs her to choose more than the blacklist. Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) agrees that the listing could support hold Liz harmless, allowing for her to get immunity with the FBI (nevertheless he doesn’t know about Red’s plans for execution just yet). Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) — who is doing a great deal better and shares a kiss with Liz in the medical center — and Aram (Amir Arison) disagree, telling Liz that she’s no prison.
As viewers hold out to see what Liz will do, the writers start out dropping hints about exactly where items may well be headed for the character. In a callback to the pilot episode, Liz operates into Beth Ryker, the daughter of Normal Ryker and the young woman whom she saved by defusing a bomb all of those years in the past. Beth reminds Liz that via her bravery she saved 1000’s of lives.
This reminder spurs Liz to rethink Red’s offer and she fulfills with him in New York to communicate it over. She desires to know why he thinks she as his “heir” would perform, why folks would accept that, and he clarifies that “they’ll accept it due to the fact you are a legal.”
“Is that what I am? Or is that what I am since of you?” she asks.
“I’ve viewed as that query so lots of moments, how items might’ve been distinct if I had by no means re-entered your existence,” he muses. “Would you be safer? Happier? Was it my existence by yourself that brought you to this crossroads? Or probably none of that ever mattered. It’s possible you ended up born to this, out of a lie, the daughter of a spy, genetically predisposed to deception and threat. I don’t know.
“Whether it’s prospect or karma, DNA or destiny or just undesirable luck, this is in which you are now. This is who you’ve turn into. A prison, a fugitive. And getting my daily life is a way forward,” he concludes.
Red then lays out the strategy: He’s internet hosting a non-public celebration at his restaurant Pascal’s the next evening. She’ll hold out exterior of the cafe, and when every person leaves, she’ll shoot him on the sidewalk in front of CCTV cameras. The footage will then be leaked and phrase will get out internationally that she’s the new prison in demand.
Even though Liz mulls more than the conclusion, there is a different wrapping-up of sorts for her and Purple, as the two, along with Agnes, share a good afternoon in Central Park. He also talks about her mother, admitting that he realized her “better than anyone.” The cause he simply cannot reveal his identity in advance of she kills him? “If you knew beforehand, you’d hardly ever concur to get rid of me.”
In the end, Liz decides she’ll do it, and the pieces start off to slide into position as she has small, specific times with other vital persons in her lifestyle. She phone calls up Aram and asks him to forgive her in progress for “what she’s carried out and what she will do.” She also phone calls Agnes, who tells her she “feels blessed” acquiring her as a mother. This just cannot close nicely, correct?
Soon enough, Ressler, Cooper, and Aram figured out what’s going to occur with Crimson and Liz and they rush to the cafe to intervene, but they really do not make it in time. In its place, Liz ways Raymond but she can’t shoot him. As she stands there frozen, gun in hand, she’s quickly shot in the again by an unknown felony. Red pursues him and usually takes him out, but it is too late. Liz’s life is flashing ahead of her eyes: her childhood, her lifestyle with Tom, becoming a member of Cooper’s team, her friendship with Aram, her romance with Ressler, seeing Agnes mature up, and lastly, her journey with Crimson.
And then, the massive second: Crimson kisses Liz on the head just as we get a flashback to Liz’s mother holding her as a baby and kissing her. (Is this the final confirmation that Pink is Liz’s mom, Katarina?!) The episode then finishes with Dembe pulling Pink absent, as Liz lays bleeding on the ground and the process pressure operates in.
What a finale! And although we’re not 100 percent selected that Liz is useless, presented all of the hints at her demise during the episode (her final moments with liked kinds, the callback to her early scenario, the building peace with Pink) and the huge pool of blood about her entire body, we do not have large hopes. Of class, Liz could survive and just be off-camera heading ahead, but presented that series creator Jon Bokenkamp explained to Tv set Insider that the finale is “very considerably the ending of a tale we have been telling for eight decades,” we never assume Elizabeth Eager is prolonged for this globe.
So there you have it: Rest in peace (maybe?) Liz. May possibly we find out extra about your (maybe?) mom in Year 9, simply because as we outlined, even however Boone is long gone, Spader is not hanging up his fedora just however. The Blacklist was renewed back in January, so we can suppose Red’s tale will carry on, together with those people of Ressler, Aram, and Harold Cooper.
